Tip-calculation guide

How to calculate a tip before tax

To tip before tax, apply your percentage to the bill subtotal rather than the tax-inclusive total. It is a preference, so use the convention that makes sense for the group and place.

The formula

Tip = pre-tax subtotal × tip percentage. For a $60 subtotal and a 20% tip, the tip is $12. Add that $12 to the tax-inclusive bill to get the final amount to pay.

Then split the final total

Once tax and tip are added, divide the final total equally or by each person's custom share. Keep a little room for rounding when people are paying separately.

Set it once in Tiply

Tiply has a tip-before-tax setting, so the app can calculate from the subtotal while still showing the complete bill. You can pair it with custom tip presets and equal or unequal bill splits.
