How to split a bill with unequal amounts
An equal split is quick, but it is not always fair. When people ordered different items, work from each person's share and distribute the tip and tax consistently.
Use the itemized subtotal
- Write down what each person owes before tax and tip.
- Add the shares to make sure they match the bill subtotal.
- Choose whether to apply the tip to the subtotal or the total.
- Apply the same percentage to each person's share, then add any tax.
Handle shared items openly
Divide shared dishes, service fees, or delivery fees equally unless the group agrees on another split. Rounding a few cents is usually easier than chasing an exact fraction.
